Google’s Pick To Win March Madness
I decided to run a little test in Google. My mission: find out which university would win March Madness based on how popular they were in Google. The set up was simple- type in the full, exact name of the university and see how many results Google said they were. Whoever had more results advances in the bracket. The results were shocking.
First in the East bracket. Ohio State was the heavy favorite to win it all according to the experts. The first round threw everything into chaos. Ohio State survived, but Kentucky was ousted by Princeton and it wasn’t even close. Marquette brought down Xavier in a close one. But the biggest shock of the day was Long Island’s huge win over North Carolina by a single point.
The madness continued into the next round when Princeton knocked off West Virginia. Ohio State, Syracuse and Washington all advanced as well. In the Sweet Sixteen, Princeton continued their dominance by slaying Ohio State, and Washington surprised Syracuse. In the Elite Eight matchup, the fairy tale was over for Princeton and Washington advances from the bracket into the Final Four.
The Southwest bracket scored an even bigger first round upset when Boston University beat Kansas. USC also shocked Georgetown and Florida State gave Texas A&M more than they could handle. Illinois blows out UNLV. Favorites advance in the other games. Boston U continued their streak by beating Illinois. Vanderbilt topped Louisville, and Purdue advanced to play a big surprise- Florida State, who just knocked off Notre Dame.
In a shock to everyone, Boston U beats Vanderbilt and Florida State beats Purdue to advance to the Elite Eight. Florida State barely tops Boston U to get to the Final Four.
The West region had a pretty quiet first round. Missouri and Penn State pulled off the upsets, but the other favorites all advanced. The second round got interesting when Michigan upset Duke and Missouri and Penn State scored two more upsets over Uconn and SDSU. Michigan barely topped Texas and Penn State edged Missouri. Michigan wins the bracket and goes to the Final Four.
The Southeast bracket followed the most sensible way anyone could have predicted. There wasn’t a single first round upset, but Utah State only fell short by a point. The first upset in the bracket was for St. John’s who beat up on the depleted BYU squad. In the next round, Wisconsin shocked Pitt and Florida advanced over St. John’s. Florida wins it against Wisconsin to get to the Final Four.
In the Final Four matchups, Washington narrowly falls to Michigan and Florida handily blows by Florida State. Michigan and Florida meet in the championship and Michigan comes up way short. Florida was declared by Google to be the winner, according to my highly scientific method. Final score? 56-40. That’s because University of Florida returns about 56,400,000 results and University of Michigan returns 40,300,000 results.
So there you have it, Florida cruises to another title and Kansas is left wondering how Boston University is more popular than they are in Google. I have submitted my bracket to ESPN and hope the psychic powers of Google’s search results bring me glory in this year’s tournament challenge.
