No, I am not making this up. Yes, Miley Cyrus really said this to some Australian journalist ahead of her Australian tour:

“It should be harder to be an artist. You shouldn’t just be able to put a song on YouTube and go out on tour.”

Tell it like it is, girl! She’s so right, becoming an artist should require talent…or a famous dad who has already recorded music and been on TV shows. And she’s right, you shouldn’t just be able to put a song on YouTube and go on tour…you should have your own Disney show first.

You see, this is why music sucks so bad these days. That’s why they aren’t called singer or musicians anymore, they’re called artists. It’s because being an artist is no longer a sacred rite reserved for the privileged and elite of society. I mean, remember the good old days when only people with a famous dad and their own Disney show hit the big time? Back then we didn’t have to try and sort through the untalented riffraff of YouTube.

Heaven forbid people actually being able to show the world their creativity and talent on a global forum like YouTube, right Miley? Artists should not be self made hard workers…they should have it handed to them because of their pedigree. Miley doesn’t stop there.

“I don’t lip-sync. I would rather someone say I sang like crap than have people see me lip-sync.”

You sing like crap. I’ve got news for you, if you weren’t at all attractive and had a different dad, you would not be an artist, even if you had the exact same voice you do now.

Let’s even talk about the word artist, something Miley Cyrus considers herself apparently. Perhaps her most popular song has been The Climb. That song was written by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe. It was produced by John Shanks. Another popular song recorded by Miley Cyrus is Party in the USA. That one was written by Lukasz Gottwald, Claude Kelly and Jessica Cornish. It was produced by Dr. Luke.

What exactly makes Miley Cyrus an artist? She doesn’t write the lyrics to her songs, she doesn’t compose the music to her songs and she doesn’t produce her own songs. You’re an artist because you sing other people’s tunes? Well give me an auto tuner and I can do the same thing like all the great artists are doing today.

YouTube stars are self made. Look at America’s Got Talent, they had a bunch of talented YouTube stars on the show because they were (mostly) talented. These are self made people here. What does Miley Cyrus have against self made people? Oh yeah, she isn’t self made. Life has been handed to her on a silver platter and she has still managed to screw it up a bunch of times, or in her words:

“I mess up. There you go. But if you live your life trying to be perfect, you don’t really live your life ever.”

Inspirational words for the rising generation. You can’t be perfect so don’t bother trying. Anyone hear about a movie called Idiocracy? Does anyone else feel like it’s actually happening in real life sometimes? I sure do.

Let’s be honest here. Justin Bieber and now Rebecca Black have been getting more attention than Miley Cyrus. She feels snuffed because all these two did to get their fame was throw some YouTube video online. Well don’t feel so bad Miley, more people know who you are than Joe Biden…some guy who is only the Vice President and first in line to become the most powerful man in the world if anything happens to Barack Obama.

Perhaps Miley Cyrus is starting to believe the lyrics that other people write for her, like this thought provoking stanza:

“For those who don’t know me,
I can get a bit crazy
Have to get my way,yep
24 hours a day
’cause I’m hot like that”

With deep, artistic lyrics like this, it’s no wonder she demands respect as an artist and that the media ignore these other wannabes. Apparently YouTube is what’s wrong with the world. It is clouding our judgment and blurring the lines between real artists and common rubbish.

I believe the next group of unwarranted stars that Miley will target are people who just audition for some TV show, anyone on Vagrant records, boy bands or Nickelback. Let’s hope she exposes more frauds for the unartistic swine with undeserved fame and attention they truly are.

I decided to run a little test in Google. My mission: find out which university would win March Madness based on how popular they were in Google. The set up was simple- type in the full, exact name of the university and see how many results Google said they were. Whoever had more results advances in the bracket. The results were shocking.

First in the East bracket. Ohio State was the heavy favorite to win it all according to the experts. The first round threw everything into chaos. Ohio State survived, but Kentucky was ousted by Princeton and it wasn’t even close. Marquette brought down Xavier in a close one. But the biggest shock of the day was Long Island’s huge win over North Carolina by a single point.

The madness continued into the next round when Princeton knocked off West Virginia. Ohio State, Syracuse and Washington all advanced as well. In the Sweet Sixteen, Princeton continued their dominance by slaying Ohio State, and Washington surprised Syracuse. In the Elite Eight matchup, the fairy tale was over for Princeton and Washington advances from the bracket into the Final Four.

The Southwest bracket scored an even bigger first round upset when Boston University beat Kansas. USC also shocked Georgetown and Florida State gave Texas A&M more than they could handle. Illinois blows out UNLV. Favorites advance in the other games. Boston U continued their streak by beating Illinois. Vanderbilt topped Louisville, and Purdue advanced to play a big surprise- Florida State, who just knocked off Notre Dame.

In a shock to everyone, Boston U beats Vanderbilt and Florida State beats Purdue to advance to the Elite Eight. Florida State barely tops Boston U to get to the Final Four.

The West region had a pretty quiet first round. Missouri and Penn State pulled off the upsets, but the other favorites all advanced. The second round got interesting when Michigan upset Duke and Missouri and Penn State scored two more upsets over Uconn and SDSU. Michigan barely topped Texas and Penn State edged Missouri. Michigan wins the bracket and goes to the Final Four.

The Southeast bracket followed the most sensible way anyone could have predicted. There wasn’t a single first round upset, but Utah State only fell short by a point. The first upset in the bracket was for St. John’s who beat up on the depleted BYU squad. In the next round, Wisconsin shocked Pitt and Florida advanced over St. John’s. Florida wins it against Wisconsin to get to the Final Four.

In the Final Four matchups, Washington narrowly falls to Michigan and Florida handily blows by Florida State. Michigan and Florida meet in the championship and Michigan comes up way short. Florida was declared by Google to be the winner, according to my highly scientific method. Final score? 56-40. That’s because University of Florida returns about 56,400,000 results and University of Michigan returns 40,300,000 results.

So there you have it, Florida cruises to another title and Kansas is left wondering how Boston University is more popular than they are in Google. I have submitted my bracket to ESPN and hope the psychic powers of Google’s search results bring me glory in this year’s tournament challenge.

I know I am not alone here. If you are in any way associated with my industry, then every single day on Facebook or Twitter you are forced to see someone has entered an iPad giveaway and it’s the greatest thing. Then you hear a radio station doing a local promotion and making a big deal that they are giving away an iPad. Now you even hear about people giving away an iPad 2, the latest and greatest.

What is with these? Do people not realize how worthless these things still are? Let me give you some comparison. An iPad wifi only version that is refurbished now goes for $349. Non-refurbished iPads go for $399 on the wifi only version. An iPad 2 starts at $599 in stores. So let’s say for simplicity sake that the “amazing prize” you are getting is valued somewhere between $400 and $600.

You can get a Wii, all 4 controllers with motionplus and about 10 games for that price.

You could get two Kindles, one for you and your significant other, to read books together on the digital device.

You could get about 500 junior bacon cheeseburgers from Wendy’s. That’s two per day for every weekday for a year.

You get buy about 40 new albums from your favorite bands or singers.

You could get a laptop that is actually easy to use and type and isn’t much bigger or bulkier and doesn’t have a little Apple logo on it.

You could buy a brand new 10 foot lovesac for the family room. That or a full size sofa at a wholesaler.

You could buy a 46″ flat screen plasma TV.

You could go see 50 movies at the theater. That’s about one movie per week for a year.

You could get over 100 large blizzards from Dairy Queen.

You could get a small firearm with ammo. Or a puppy that could grow into your guard dog, whichever makes you feel safer.

You could get an Xbox 360 with Kinect.

You could go to a used video game store and buy a Nintendo 64 with about 30 games.

You could get a large, one topping pizza from Papa John’s every Saturday for a year.

You could buy 10 new pairs of shoes.

You could get a motor scooter.

You could buy out all the snacks in a vending machine…twice.

You could get an iPhone, which does most of what an iPad does but more importantly is also a phone.

You could get 300 boxes of bottled water.

You could buy 500 Snickers bars.

You could get an autographed Tim Lincecum jersey.

You could get $600 cash.

There’s plenty of other things I would rather have than an iPad if that much money is on the table for a prize. Think about that the next time you enter to win one of those dumb giveaways.

Don’t get confused though- McDonald’s still has a very commanding lead in revenue. But at least a healthier alternative to fast food is growing rapidly worldwide. Maybe a sign the world is trying to eat healthier on a day to day basis? We can only hope. Either way, thought it was interesting.
